Tile and Manvel’s moving slabs don’t naturally get along

Tile is rigid, and the ground under Manvel is anything but. We build the wet area on a real system: a bonded sheet or liquid membrane, or a foam-board system with sealed seams and corners, over a properly sloped and drained pan.

Skipping that is the hidden shower failure that feeds moisture into the framing, and in Gulf humidity that framing doesn’t dry back out. Backsplashes and non-wet floors don’t need the full shower treatment, but wet walls and shower pans always do, and we won’t tile a Manvel shower without it.

Large-format tile wants a flat floor

Grout, movement joints, and the details that last

Even a well-isolated Manvel floor needs somewhere to move. Movement joints — soft, flexible joints at the perimeter and in large tiled areas, and flexible sealant where tile meets tubs, cabinets, and dissimilar surfaces — give the assembly room to breathe so seasonal movement shows up as a re-caulk rather than a cracked grout line.

Will Manvel’s clay soil crack my tile floor?

It can, if the tile is set straight to the slab, because seasonal clay movement transfers through the concrete into rigid tile and grout. We install an uncoupling or crack-isolation membrane over Manvel slabs so normal movement doesn’t crack the floor. It’s not a fix for a severely moving foundation, which we’d flag before setting tile.
